REVIEWS

Georgia Straight thinks, “The Toronto actor is entirely your best reason to catch this homegrown effort, modestly undertaken between friends and actual lovers (Cullen and Maslany are a couple in real life).”

Toronto Star says, “Writer/director Joey Klein delivers an unconventional love story that succeeds in large part due to the standout performance of the two principals. While Cullen is impressive as the brooding Nickie, Maslany’s portrayal of Emily is even more heartaching.”

NOW Toronto observes, “Cullen is quietly terrific as a man who’s spent so much time locking away his feelings that he’s overwhelmed by their resurgence, and Maslany is ferocious as the mercurial, unstable lover with whom he can find balance.”

The Globe and Mail gives the movie 3.5 out of 4 stars, and further notes, “The performances are pitch perfect; the soundtrack is evocative; the photography is artful. Nothing is overdone, and nothing is really resolved. Klein strikes great balances, as we root, probably in vain, for the co-dependency of his two main characters to result in something approaching stability.”

National Post writes, “Maslany and Cullen have been praised extensively (and justly) for their work here in festival reviews and across the trades; no less excellent, if perhaps less conspicuous, are the performances of the film’s supporting players.”

The MacGuffin says, “If you have seen Maslany’s Orphan Black, you know she is able to play so many characters that all look the same. The impressive Maslany takes Emily under her wing and she does such great things with her.”

Every Movie Has a Lesson gives the movie 3 stars, and further writes, “Cullen and Maslany are a couple in real-life and their prickly attraction is wholly palpable on-screen.  They are the reasons to experience this film.”
