The Hollywood Reporter notes, “There are some solid elements here, but neither believability nor cohesion is among them in a contrived thriller that wraps a gritty Boston milieu redolent of a Dennis Lehane story around a sentimental heart, with a high-stakes art heist that belongs in a more robustly plotted Hollywood studio picture.”

According to Variety, “Nothing feels fresh here — not even Christopher Plummer hamming it up as a crusty-coot grandpa — and Philip Martin’s routinely polished direction only underscores the cliche-composting of Richard D’Ovidio’s script.”

IndieWire (The Playlist) thinks, “Uninspired films utilizing cinematic devices that felt old decades ago are a regrettable part of the cinematic viewing experience, and “The Forger” squarely falls into this category.”

Reelfilm says, “The anticlimactic finish ultimately confirms The Forger’s place as a misguided piece of work, which is too bad, really, given the promise of the film’s early scenes.”

JoBlo Movie Emporium writes, “Watched outside of TIFF, THE FORGER might have come across as a totally passable time-filler, but it’s a Netflix watch at best. Travolta could still make a big comeback, but he needs something a little meatier than this instantly forgettable heist thriller without any thrills.”
