Revew – The Soul Man
Variety said the show “shrewdly taps into the frothy mix of broad comedy and religion that has made Tyler Perry very, very rich — and Cedric can carry the show without even needing to wear women’s clothes. High art it’s not, but the series should deliver on a level that won’t require passing the plate on its behalf.”
The New York Daily News calls the show “flat-out funny,” and says it “makes sweet new sitcom music” while finding “old-school laughs.”
The Salt Lake Tribune calls it “loud,” and “over the top,” and says the show really does have “a lot of soul.”
The San Francisco Chronicle said it’s “nicely assembled and almost old fashioned.” They also point out that “there is an anachronistic scarcity of series with either African American lead characters or mostly African American casts on television today.”
Entertainment Weekly said, “Cedric the Entertainer plays an R&B singer-turned-preacher. As if a higher power would forgive any song titled “Sex Wichoo.”
