REVIEWS

According to Washington Post, “The Duelist will leave viewers scratching their heads over any number of questions, but the most gnawing one might be: Why did everyone get so dressed up for a bloodbath?”

Los Angeles Times says, “The sumptuously shot, costumed, designed and scored Russian import The Duelist dazzles and provokes as it makes little real sense beyond the confines of its hermetic milieu.”

The New York Times finds, “The clichéd story line pursues turgidity with a relentless determination.”

Philadelphia Inquirer gives the movie 2.5 out of 4 stars, and calls the movie “a tiresome but meticulously detailed and visually sumptuous Russian melodrama about romance and intrigue amid the nobility in 19th-century St. Petersburg.”

Village Voice thinks, “What’s most arresting is the way Mizgirev’s vision of 1860s Russia shines through in the perspiration on Champagne goblets, the flicker of candlelight on faces, and the sheen of polished-steel dueling pistols.”

According to Arizona Republic, “The film (shot in IMAX) looks great, but the story is convoluted.”

SF Weekly calls the movie “A Russian version of Les Misérables that’s full of gore.”

RogerEbert.com gives the film 3 stars, and further writes, “With these stars and its other strengths, “The Duelist” is a welcome indication of the current Russian cinema’s commercial ambitions and potential.”

Screen International observes, “Despite some pacing issues and a slightly repetitive second act, this is a polished production which establishes writer/director Aleksei Mizgirev as a talent to watch”

A.V. Club gives the movie a C+ rating, and further notes, “It’s The Duelist’s inability to recognize its own ludicrousness that makes it, in spots, delectable as camp.”

According to We Got This Covered, “The Duelist isn’t deep enough for the viewer to attempt to draw meaning from beneath its glam surface, but it’s still interesting to watch the film as a look at where Russia is at as a nation.”

FilmInk says, “The colourful setting in imperial Russia pushes The Duelist over the line, making it a diverting adventure story.”
